Dexter and How I Met Your Mother are two completely different shows that share one unfortunate thing in common: each has a series finale so bad that it retroactively ruins what came before, making it difficult for fans to revisit even the bigger episodes. Dexterthe ending was so bad that I hesitated to check out the surprisingly decent series of sequels New blood. But I did it once and then researched it Dexter: Original Sin (chair scrolling through the ratings) I decided now was the time to watch the original Dexter show off your gory magic on Netflix.
What you need to know about Dexter
If you've never watched Dexter Before you add it to yours Netflix in line. Our title character is a Miami Police Department forensics specialist with a surprising secret: he's a serial killer driven by the violent desires of his “dark passenger” ever since he witnessed his mother brutally murdered. Raised by a cop who trained his adoptive son to only kill bad people, Dexter now has to lead a double life as both a lighthearted blood spatter analyst and a ruthless vigilante killer.
Dexter (unlike many Netflix shows) has a great cast including Michael C. Hall (otherwise best known by Six feet under), who won a Golden Globe for his powerful performance. Other great members include Julia Benz (from Buffy and Angel fame) as Dexter's love interest and Jennifer Carpenter (horror fans will know her from Quarantine and The Exorcism of Emily Rose) as his pot-mouthed sister. And without going into spoilers, later seasons will feature great guest stars including Jimmy Smith, Edward James OlmosJohn Lithgow and many others.
If cast from Dexter doesn't inspire you to open your Netflix account, you might be interested to see how many awards and nominations this quirky killer show has received. The show was nominated for an impressive 24 Primetime Emmy Awards and took home two of them, just as it was nominated for 10 Golden Globe Awards and won two statues. As for Hall, he personally received one of those Golden Globes, as well as Satellite, Saturn and Screen Actors Guild Awards for his outstanding performance as Dexter.
Mostly Dexter wowed critics and fans alike long before it hit Netflix. On Rotten tomatoesthe series has a critical rating of 71 percent and an 81 percent audience rating (using the Popcornmeter). It goes to show that even though the series has a legendarily awful ending, most watched it, that it was more than the sum of its parts, and that its creativity and clever execution outweighed the show's rather epic stumbles for most of its eight seasons. finish line at the end.
The right time to visit again
In addition New blood really did their best to redeem the original show's weird ending, and Original sin turns out to be a clever foreshadowing that adds crisp context to our titular assassin's earlier adventures. All in all, these two sequel shows did what I once thought was impossible: kept me interested in the original show despite its extremely flawed finale. And now this Dexter is on Netflix, I was excited to watch one of premium cable's boldest and goriest creations.
