a generation Elfen lied was an introduction to the world of anime, mainly because if you can get past the gore, violence, and fanservice in this series, you can get past almost any other mainstream anime series. The cute box art and character designs belie its edginess and self-seriousness, which, let's be honest, hasn't aged well at all. The show's influence extends beyond the anime world, and the Duffer brothers cited the murderous Lucy as a direct influence on the film's design. Stranger things Eleven.
A telekinetic girl meets a naive boy
Once you hear that the telekinetic Lucy, who was so traumatized by her experience at a secret facility where she, along with other Diclonians….Dicloniusi?…a mutant species that has begun to appear and pose an increasing threat to normal humans, has been studied for years. Lucy's escape inside Elfen lied is significantly more violent than Eleven inside Stranger things Season 1 with significantly more blood and more dead bodies used as shields, but each one is saved by a good-natured young boy who develops a crush on a girl who can kill him with the power of her mind.
Elfen lied settles down quickly after escaping the lab and soon finds a rhythm that keeps it going for 13 episodes. Lucy, who likes to kill people and is sadistic about it, is replaced by a different personality, Nya, for most of the show. As Nyu, Lucy is friendly and innocent and doesn't want to hurt anyone with her telekinetic powers, which manifest as invisible hands called “vectors”, although she retains the ability to destroy all of humanity.
This is a remarkable feat Elfen lied manages to go between heartfelt drama, coming-of-age romance, and violent slaughter-fest all in one episode. Some parts haven't aged well over the years, namely the fan service and occasional gore, but others, including the surprisingly deep characterizations of what looks like a schlock fest on the surface, are still relevant. You just have to get past the bloodshed to find human emotion even in the inhuman characters of Diclonius.
Elfen Lied is not for everyone
Stranger things drawn from many media, especially 80s classics including Akirathe ultimate sci-fi anime that redefined the entire entertainment industry, that's why Elfen liedThe 2004 release, which serves as a template for one of the biggest breakthroughs of the last decade, is somewhat surprising. Then again, there's still nothing quite like anime's unique mix of genres, which is such a great introduction animeand also a very terrible intro, all at the same time. Needless to say, this is absolutely not for kids, no matter how cute the DVD box art looks.
Elfen lied was not my introduction to anime; it was a Toonami block on Cartoon Network a decade ago, but it was one of the first things I watched when I picked up the medium again. By then, I was used to the bleak darkness and self-seriousness of 90s comics, which created a strange mix of harem anime events, Berserk-style bloodshed and overly cute characters, just the kind of weirdness I needed at the time. It also helps that the music, especially Lilyis an absolute blast and every time you play it you'll find yourself motivated to keep going for another episode.
