TikTok plans to shut down in the US on January 19 due to ban

TikTokTime may be up in the United States.

After all, the social media platform announced plans to shut down in the United States on January 19 unless the Supreme Court can overturn or delay the implementation of a law intended to force ByteDance, the company Chinese mother behind the app, for sale to an American buyer, according to the Associated Press.

Last year, the president Joe Biden signed into law a law to remove TikTok from U.S. app stores and ban internet providers across the country from allowing access to the platform if ByteDance cannot sell to a U.S. company by January 19.

The legislation was put in place amid concerns that China was using TikTok to spy on US residents.

In response, TikTok filed an emergency motion for an injunction to prevent the ban from taking effect, arguing that it violates the First Amendment and will generate “substantial losses,” according to legal documents reviewed by E! News.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments Jan. 10 on whether or not the law should be enforced.
