What Aaron Rodgers had to say about his NFL future during a terrible Jets season

The future looked bright Aaron Rodgers and New York Jet earlier in the season, but now the veteran quarterback is left to wonder if he even has a future.

Rodgers, 41, and the Jets lost 40-14 to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Dec. 29, the team's 6th loss in 7 games, dropping their overall record to a very disappointing 4-12 on the season.

During CBS' Sunday game broadcast, the legendary game analyst Jim Nantes revealed Rodgers' response when asked about his future in New York.

“He looked us straight in the eye and said, 'I really don't know.' I'm going to take some time off,” Nantes, 65, said.

Rodgers remains under contract with the Jets through next season. The team could decide to move on from the legendary quarterback, which would put a big financial burden on the franchise. There is also the possibility that Rodgers simply decides to leave.

Rodgers told reporters after Sunday's game that the loss was a microcosm of the Jets' entire year.

“I think it's the same as the season, it just got away from us,” he said. “Too many plays we got away with. We moved the ball and then we just hit the wall and that's what the season has been like.

The Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh in October after a 2-3 start, but the team has only won two games under the interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich. The team traded for Rodgers' friend and former Green Bay Packers teammate Davante Adams later that month, but the Jets offense has continued to sputter since the trade.

In short, nothing has helped the sinking ship.

During an appearance on ESPN Even the McAfee show On Monday, Dec. 23, Rodgers said the Jets would be his “first choice” if he chooses to play next season.

“I think there's a world where they just say, 'Hey, thanks, we're going to go the other way on Jan. 6,'” Rodgers told McAfee, 37, referring to the day after the Jets' regular season ends. “That's an opportunity.”

The Jets close out the regular season on Sunday, January 5 against the Miami Dolphins.

Whatever happens, Rodgers said he doesn't plan to make an immediate decision about his future.

“I'm going to be out for a while in a year — unless I'm fired right now,” Rodgers said Wednesday, Dec. 18. Even the McAfee show. “But I will still need some time whether I want to play or not. Either way I will need time to recover from it.
