What does Devi end up with on Netflix Never?

Teen shows are Netflixbut few are as funny, charming, chaotic and emotionally grounded as Never Have I Ever. Created by Lang Fisher and Mindy Kaling, the series follows the exploits of Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreya Ramakrishnan in her first role), a bold, self-confident Indian-American teenager who is constantly thwarted from kissing boys, getting into a good college, and feeling good about her father again (“Heroes” alum Sendhil Ramamurthy's) unexpected passing.

The show opens with a precocious, adventurous Devi who wants to lose her virginity and has her sights set on the most popular boy in school. Thankfully, the show doesn't fall flat though high school-virgin tropic areaand instead turns into a stunningly beautiful (and consistently weird) take on the complexities of teenage relationships, self-esteem, and more. Its final season is a smash hit, and the series finale is far better than it has any right to be. Frankly, “Never Have I Ever” at times feels like Kaling's show, The Mindy Project, might have ended before it got off the rails. It's a coming-of-age comedy, but it also has a lot of love for the rom-com genre, and it's perfect for its happily-ever-after — even if it no doubt left a few shippers behind when it resolved its central love triangle. I feel slighted.

When “Never Have I Ever” began in 2020, there was one big crush at the center of its romantic frenzy: Paxton Hall-Josid, the popular heartthrob whom Devi proposed to in the very first episode. Paxton, played “Road House” and “Chicago Med” actor Darren Barnettagrees despite Devi's outcast status, and although the pair don't actually meet until much later, the dream of hooking up with the object of her affection drives Devi throughout the series.

Meanwhile, Ben (“Tag” actor Jaren Lewison) is there. Once Devi's bitter academic rival, the geek with a secret soft spot begins to develop feelings for his nemesis, and the pair's relationship blossoms — and unravels — in surprising ways throughout the series. At the end of season three, Devi brings Ben the “friends with benefits” card he gave her half-jokingly, and finally loses her virginity with him. Sex doesn't solve everything, though, as she and Ben go through a lot of growing pains and spend most of Season 4 seeing other people and focusing on their college plans.

Ben and Paxton are the show's two main love interests, but Davy gets to explore her sexuality, experience early heartbreak, and figure out what she wants out of a relationship with some other boys. In Season 3, she meets Des (“9-1-1” actor Anirudh Pisharody), whom she is smitten with, despite him being the son of her mom's close friend. When Des expects Devi, assuming she is still with Paxton, she kisses a clumsy but musically minded guy named Alejandro (Matias Salas Silva) to get her piece back, but they don't end up dating and she and Des later reconcile.

Des and Devi eventually break up when she finds out that his mother forced him to divorce her because she thinks Devi is “crazy”. It's really sad, but the moment cements Devi's relationship with her mom Nalini (The Night Of star Poorna Jagannathan), who ends her relationship with Des' mom. In Season 4, Devi also dates a bad boy named Ethan (Michael Cimino from “Love, Victor”), who she's pretty hot and heavy with until it turns out he's really bad. She dumps him when he steals her Ivy League contact's purse.

Maitreya Ramakrishnan, who beat out thousands of other young actors for the role of Devi, was diplomatic about the question of “Team Pakton or Team Ben” throughout the series, but she finally spilled to Variety as the show drew to a close. “Yeah, I'm Team Devi, but now I can make a decision: I'm Team Paxton,” Ramakrishnan revealed, explaining that she thinks the pair are fighting each other in an interesting way and could still end up together. “It could still be on the table later. Hear me out,” she told the outlet, noting that the pair “have that undeniable chemistry where they push each other in more ways than one.”

Meanwhile, Lewison is (as expected) Ben's team. “I'm definitely biased. I'll always be Team Ben,” he told Variety in the same interview, while acknowledging that Ramakrishnan scored great points for Team Paxton. In interview with GQhe said he likes the enemy-lovers trope that Never Have I Ever used so skillfully when it came to Devi and Ben. “If you look back at this series, Ben and Davy have always had that magnetism,” he reasoned. “They've always found each other in times of strife and great triumph. And I don't know if that makes them soul mates, but I think that says something.”

Meanwhile, Barnett said Tudums that he gave team Paxton the upper hand, but Devi's happiness was paramount. “I never want the message of the show to be that you need someone to make you happy,” he explained. “So I think part of the journey of the show is Devi finding happiness within herself.”

Devi discovers that happiness, and the show's final episode does an excellent job of focusing on all the important pieces of her story—from family life to friendships to her academic future to her grief over the loss of her father—before tying things up with a romantic epilogue. After seasons of longing glances, awkward encounters, and chaotic missed hookups, Devi and Ben finally make it when he returns from an internship in New York to tell Devi how he feels about her before she leaves for Princeton.

The pair sleep together that night, making up for the first less-than-stellar appearance earlier in the season. They also decide to date, although the show makes it pretty clear that love and dating don't have to be as serious as Devi expected when she was young, so it's unknown if they end up together. forever. Instead, we see them a few months later watching a movie together in Devi's dorm. The entire episode is sweet and surprisingly binge-worthy, proving once again that Never Have I Ever is not just a teen comedy, but one of the best TV rom-coms of recent years.

Although Devi doesn't end up with Paxton, he still finds plenty of happiness — and remains friends with the strange girl who changed his life when she inexplicably asked him for sex a few years earlier. In Season 4, Paxton struggles to find his place at Arizona State University, and in one of the show's more realistic and relatable storylines, he goes from being a very popular kid in high school to someone who doesn't immediately charm his classmates and teachers. college.

Paxton drops out of college and works as an assistant swimming coach at his old high school, where he reconnects with Devi, and the pair share a kiss and a heart-to-heart. By the end of the show, he's formed a new relationship with replacement Lindsay (Jenny Walton, “Black AF”) and has decided to return to ASU. This time, however, he continues his studies, a nice full-circle moment for a character who struggled with academics himself in the past.
