Why is David Schwimmer still traumatized by his 1995 'SNL' hosting gig?

David Schwimmer has reflected on his unpleasant experience as a guest host Saturday Night Live.

At the time when an interview with Stephen Colbert switched on The late show On Monday, Jan. 13, Schwimmer, 58, recalled a time when he was preparing for a 1995 concert Friends'good luck. (Schwimmer played the role of Ross Geller in the sitcom that launched in 1994.)

Schwimmer, who went to college with Colbert, 60, and studied with the TV host as a theater student, said he made “one big mistake” the first time around. Friends a cast member who will be invited to host SNL at that time.

“It was a huge honor…I couldn't be more excited,” explained Schwimmer. “Friends was shooting on Tuesday nights at the time, and we were shooting until 1 in the morning, so I flew from LA to New York on Wednesday to get there. I really couldn't make it SNL through Thursday, two days before the Saturday show.

Schwimmer, who currently appears in the Hulu/Disney+ series Goosebumps: Disappearscontinued, “When I walked into the writers' room, all the writers were looking at me like I'd just slept with their mom or something. They weren't happy to see me and I had no idea (why).

The actor described how he then “sort of coped” for the next two days, despite being “a bit traumatised” by his co-stars' reception.

When Colbert asked how the shoot went, Schwimmer said, “I don't remember how it went, to be honest.”

Schwimmer added that the mystifying reaction of the writers was crystallized “years later.” He explained how he “spoke to someone else who was running the show and they said, no, no, no, you should come on Monday.”

“No one told me, and for years I had no idea why,” he added.

Although Schwimmer has never resolved the mix-up, he said he was recently invited to the event the show's 50th anniversary event to be staged next month.

“It's been 30 years and I think, well, maybe they've forgotten that they don't like me? Or it’s just some intern whose job it is to email everyone who’s ever hosted, but I don’t know what to do,” Schwimmer said.

Colbert then encouraged his friend to “go” to the event, telling Schwimmer that he had “done a little work there” and hadn't received his invitation.

“Yeah, but I don't want to be like Charlie Brown with the football, you know, you're showing a lot of zeal again and, no, we don't want you here,” Schwimmer said. “Do you want to be my plus one?” (SNL It's set to celebrate its 50th anniversary on February 16 with a three-hour live special featuring five decades of popular cast members and fan-favorite guest hosts.)

A visibly amused Colbert accepted Schwimmer's invitation with a firm handshake across the desk.
